Justin Timberlake shared pro-choice views after urging Britney Spears to get an abortion

Britney Spears’ fans have pounced on the revelation in her new memoir that Justin Timberlake forced her to make the “agonizing” choice to get an abortion while they were dating more than 20 years ago because he said, at age 19, he wasn’t ready to become a father.

But, at the very least, Spears’ legion of loyal fans can’t accuse Timberlake of being inconsistent in his views on abortion. Over the years, the former NSYNC member, 42, has expressed his support for abortion rights, usually while affirming statements made by his wife Jessica Biel, Page Six reported.

In 2008, Timberlake and Biel, his then-girlfriend, attended a presidential campaign rally for Barack Obama, where the “7th Heaven” actor spoke about women’s reproductive rights and told the crowd: “Nobody should be able to say what you can do with your body.”

Timberlake joked in response, saying, “I give Jess the right to choose where we go to eat all the time. The funny thing is, what the woman chooses is usually right.”

The singer again shared his pro-choice views in 2022, Page Six said, after the US Supreme Court ended women’s constitutional right to abortion, with their ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Timberlake retweeted his wife’s angry, emotional response to the ruling.

“I am enraged. What happened today is not only a disgusting step backward for women – undermining our ability to make decisions for our own bodies… but it’s also dangerous,” Biel wrote. “You didn’t ban abortion, you banned access to SAFE abortion. #BansOffOurBodies.”

It remains to be seen if or how Spears’ revelation about her abortion 23 years ago will be used in the high-stakes political battle over women’s reproductive rights, which some strategists say could be a factor in the 2024 presidential election.

Already, though, the circumstances of Spears’ abortion have been used online to denigrate Timberlake’s reputation, certainly with regard to how he publicly treated Spears during the relationship and after.

Timberlake and Spears, fellow “Mickey Mouse Club” alums, dated from 1999 to 2022. As reported by People, Spears, 42, revealed in her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” that she became pregnant by Timberlake while they were dating.

“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy,” Spears wrote, according to People. “I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.”

But Spears revealed: “Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

Spears said: “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

About the experience of undergoing the abortion, Spears said: “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”

A representative for Timberlake did not immediately respond to People’s request for comment.

After Spears and Timberlake split in 2002, they each became parents with other partners. Spears welcomed two sons, Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17, with her second husband, Kevin Federline. Timberlake and Biel have two sons, ages 8 and 2.

Timberlake previously drew the ire of Spears’ fans after the documentary “Framing Britney Spears” was released in 2021. The documentary investigated the media’s obsession and exploitation of Spears as she became an international superstar as a teenager. The film also argued that Timberlake used Spears’ misfortunes to catapult himself to pop music fame.

Shortly after their breakup, Timberlake gave a radio interview in which he revealed that she was not the virgin she proclaimed to be. When the radio hosts lewdly asked Timberlake whether he had sex with Spears while they were dating, Timberlake laughingly replied, “OK, yeah, I did it.”

Timberlake’s comments came as he was releasing the video for his hit song “Cry Me a River.” Critics of Timberlake later accused him of using that video to push the narrative that she had been unfaithful. He also got attention by joking about her virginity in the radio interview.

In response to the criticism arising from “Framing Britney Spears,” Timberlake issued a public apology.

He wrote on Instagram that he had seen all the “messages, tags, comments and concerns” from fans who were horrified by his actions, not just towards Spears but to Janet Jackson. His role in Jackson’s infamous wardrobe “malfunction,” while the two performed during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, led to her being ostracized by the music industry.

Timberlake said he regretted how his “missteps” contributed to “a system that condones misogyny and racism.”
